Kenneth
Gates was born in
Georgia, July 10, 1950. Around 1963, while in high school as a
special education student, he began to develop an interest in
drawing. Using cartoons for inspiration, his particular favorite
being the Flintstones, he drew avidly and began to adopt a style
that would become the basis for the work he produces today.
Kenneth’s subject matter includes references to well known
cartoon characters and representations of animals, plants and
even architecture, most of it drawn from his memory. Executed
mostly in pencil and watercolor the works exhibit his sensitive
eye and a design sophistication often unexpected in self-taught
artists. Overall, the work is happy and upbeat, saying much
about the spirit of the man who creates it.
