Willie Tarver was born in 1937, in Jefferson County, Georgia.
Willie Tarver began making his whimsical structures after retiring from his factory job of twenty five years. His early pieces of animals and people were constructed from scrap iron over which he applied wet cement. Recognizing the limitations of moving such heavy pieces, he later eliminated the cement and began to weld smaller pieces out of the iron. He attributes most of his ideas to Greek Mythology, or the bible, and sometimes voodoo from his heritage.
Willie Tarver is included in the permanent collection of the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia, and in the collection of the House of Blues as well as many private collections.
